西インド諸島からペルー、ブラジルに分布しています。熱帯果樹で、今では南アメリカとフィリピンで植栽されています。高さは８〜９メートルほどになります。革質の葉は大きな長楕円形で、潰すと強い臭気がでます。果実はソフトボールくらいの大きさで棘があり薄黄色に熟します。果肉は芳香が強いものの、あまり美味しいものではないようです。

バンレイシ科バンレイシ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Annona montana。英名は Mountain soursop。

The Mountain soursop (Annona montana) belongs to Annonaceae (the Custard apple family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed from the West Indies to Peru and Brazil. It is a tropical fruit tree that is now planted in South America and the Philippines. The height will be about 8-9 m. The leathery leaves are large oblong and give off a strong odor when crushed. The fruits are about the size of a softball, have thorns and ripen pale yellow. The flesh has a strong aroma, but it does not seem to be very delicious.
