The Pollia (Pollia japonica) belongs to Commelinaceae (the Spiderwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in valleys and forest edges, and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are narrow oblong, and enfold stems. The white flowers bloom in annular and tiered clusters on the stem apices from August to September. The flowers last one day. The fruits are round berries and turn into indigo blue when mature. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "杜若", and "杜若" (du ruo) in Chinese.
