The "Yabure-gasa" (Syneilesis palmata) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in woods, forests and can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are divided into palmetly 7-9 lobes. The panicles are borne on the flower stalks and bloom white to pale rose-pink flowers from July to August. The Japanese name "Yabure-gasa" (broken umbrella) is derived from browse-shape. The young shoots are used as a wild vegetable in Japan.
