わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国、ヒマラヤに分布しています。林内や林縁に生え、高さは６０〜９０センチになります。茎は途中で成長がとまり、そこから分枝して広がります。９月から１０月ごろ、上部の葉腋に黄色い花を下向きに咲かせます。頭花の基部には緑色の総苞片があり、一部は葉状になります。春の若葉は食用にされます。和名は、葉が「たばこ」に似ていて藪に生えることから。

キク科ガンクビソウ属の多年草で、学名は Carpesium abrotanoides。英名はありません。

The "Yabu-tabako" (Carpesium abrotanoides) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to all over Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, China and around the Hymalayas. This herb grows in forests and forest edges, and it can reach 60-90 cm in height. The stem stagnates in the precess of growth and branched in four directions. The yellow flower-heads bloom discending at the upper axils from September to October. The flower-head has green bracts at the base; partly leafy bracts. The young leaves are edible. The Japanese name comes from the fact that the leaves resemble "tobacco" and grow in bushes.
