The "Yama-engosaku" (Corydalis lineariloba) belongs to Fumariaceae (the Fumitory family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as the Korean Penninsula. This herb grows in wettish deciduous forests and can reach 10-20 cm in height. The leaves are twice to three times trifoliate. The racemes are borne on the stalks and bloom pale bluish-purple to magenta flowers from April to May. The bracts cut into comb-like teeth. They are a source of honey for the butterfly (Luehdorfia puziloi) and a milkweed plant for the butterfly (Parnassius glacialis). This root has been used for Chinese herbal medicine which has effects on analgesic and antispasmodic.
