The "Yaeyama-oo-taniwatari" (Asplenium setoi) belongs to Aspleniaceae (the Spleenworts family). It is an evergreen fern that is found in Japan's Nansei Islands and Ogasawara Islands, as well as in Taiwan. It grows epiphytically on the forest floor or on tree trunks within the forest, reaching a height of about 1 m. The leaves are glossy, with prominent veins. A distinctive feature is that the midrib is not round but rather a slightly rounded triangle that protrudes noticeably. However, because there are exceptions, it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish it from "Bird's nest fern" (Asplenium nidus). The sori do not extend beyond the midpoint between the leaf margin and the midrib. In the Yaeyama Islands, the new shoots that emerge from February to June are eaten as food. It is called "東洋山蘇花" in Taiwanese Chinese.
