The "Yaeyama-raseita-so" (Boehmeria yaeyamensis) belongs to Urticaceae (the Nettle family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to the Yaeyama Islands, Ishigaki Island, Iriomote Island, and Yonaguni Island in Japan. It grows on sunny shores and is 30-70 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-round with serrated edges, dense rough hairs undersides and grow in pairs. From March to May, it produces 3 to 10 cm female inflorescences at the top of the stem and 1 to 20 cm male inflorescences in the leaf axils at the top of the stem. The flowers are small, green and densely packed.
