The "Yaeyama-utsugi" (Deutzia yaeyamensis) belongs to Hydrangeaceae (the Hydrangea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is endemic to Iriomote Island in Japan's Yaeyama Islands. It grows along mountain valleys and reaches a height of about 1 m. The leaves are elliptical to ovate, with fine serrations along the edges, and grow in opposite pairs. From around March to April, it produces panicles at the tips of its branches and blooms with white flowers. It is also known by the alternative name "Yaeyama-hime-utsugi". It is listed as Endangered (EN) in the Ministry of the Environment's Red List.
