The "Yaguruma-so" (Rodgersia podophylla) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is native all over Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in wettish forests of deep mountains, and can reach about 1 m in height. The leaves are palmate compound with five obovate leaflets, having long petioles and basal. The panicles are borne, and the pale greenish-white flowers bloom June to July. The calyx lobes resemble to petals. The leaves occasionally were used as a substitute for tobacco during the World War Two in Japan.
