The Lespedeza (Lespedeza bicolor) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is native to Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows in montane grasslands or forest edges and can reach 1-2 m in height. The leaves are trifoliate with broad elliptic to broad ovate leaflets. The long racemes are borne on the axiles and the magenta flowers bloom from July to September. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is "山胡枝子"; in Chinese, it is "胡枝子" (hu zhi zi).
