わが国の固有種で、本州の中部地方および北陸地方から東北地方の日本海側に分布しています。山地から亜高山帯の沢沿いなどに生え、高さは１０〜１５メートルになります。樹皮は灰黒色で平滑です。葉は倒心形で、矢筈に似ています。縁には不揃いな重鋸歯があります。雌雄同株で、４月から５月ごろ、葉の展開前に花を咲かせます。果実は堅果で、果穂は楕円形をしています。

カバノキ科ハンノキ属の落葉高木で、学名は Alnus matsumurae。英名はありません。

"Yahazu-hannoki" (Alnus matsumurae) belongs to Betulaceae (the Birch family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Japan and distributed to Chubu district and the Japan Sea side of Honshu. This tree grows in montane to subalpine streamsides and can reach 10-15 m in height. The barks are grayish black and smooth. The leaves are obcordate with irregular duplicato-serratus edges. It is monoecious. The flowers come in April to May as soon as foliation. The fruits are nuts and the clusters are elliptic.
