わが国の北海道西南部から本州、四国・九州それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。山野の林内に生え、高さは４０〜７０センチになります。茎には下向きの毛がわずかにあります。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で、基部は浅く茎を抱きます。７月から９月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から散房花序をだし、白地に紫紅色の斑がある花を咲かせます。花披片の斑は大きく、強く反り返ります。また、花糸の下部に紫色の斑があります。

ユリ科ホトトギス属の多年草で、学名は Tricyrtis macropoda。英名はありません。

"Yama-hototogisu" (Tricyrtis macropoda) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is native from south-western Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu, as well as the Korean Penninsula and China. This herb grows in mountainous forests and it can reach 40-70 cm in height. The stem bears sparsely downward hairs. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and clasp shallowly the stem. The corymbs are borne atop of stem and on the axils, and bloom thepurple-red mottled aganist a white background flowers. The tepals have large mottles and strongly reflexed. In addition, there are purple spots at the lower part of the filaments.
