The "Yama-itachi-shida" (Dryopteris bissetiana) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed throughout Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and China. It grows on the forest floor in mountainous areas and at the margins of forests along streams, and is 40 to 70 cm tall. The leaves are dark green and bipinnate compound. The first pinnule of the lowest pinna is large and sessile. The petiolar base is covered with light brown to black scales. The sorus is rather large and is located between the midrib and the margin of the pinnule. In Chinese, it is called "兩色鱗毛蕨" (liang se lin mao jue).
