インドから東南アジア、中国南部に分布しています。熱帯地方に生え、蔓性で節ごとに巻きひげを出して、他物に絡みつきながら伸び、長さは３〜２０メートルになります。葉は掌状に大きく５裂します。雌雄異株です。葉柄の腋から直径５〜６ミリの白色の花を咲かせます。果実は楕円形の液果で、赤く熟します。東南アジアでは、若芽と果実を食用とするため栽培されています。台湾華語では「紅瓜」、中国語では「紅瓜（hong gua）」と呼ばれます。

ウリ科コッキニア属の一年草で、学名は Coccinia grandis (syn. Coccinia indica)。英名は Ivy gourd、Scarlet-fruited gourd。

The Ivy gourd (Coccinia grandis) belongs to Cucurbitaceae (the Gourd family). It is an annual herb that is distributed from India to Southeast Asia and southern China. It grows in tropical regions. It is a vine that produces tendrils at each node and grows 3 to 20 meters long while twining around other objects. The leaves are palmately lobed with five large lobes. It is dioecious. White flowers, 5 to 6 mm in diameter, bloom from the axils of the petioles. The fruit is an elliptic berry that ripens to red. In Southeast Asia, it is cultivated for its edible young shoots and fruits. It is called "red melon" in Taiwanese and "紅瓜" (hong gua) in Chinese.
