わが国の九州、屋久島の固有種です。標高５００〜１９００メートルに生え、草原帯を形成しています。桿は直径が２〜５ミリ、高さは４０〜１００センチになります。桿の上部でよく分枝して、節からは１個の枝がでます。節はほとんど膨らみません。葉は両面とも無毛です。別名で「やくざさ（屋久笹）」とも呼ばれます。

イネ科ヤダケ属の常緑タケ類で、学名は Pseudosasa owatarii。英名はありません。

"Yakushima-dake" (Pseudosasa owatarii) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is an evergreen bamboo that is an endemic species of Yakushima Island, Kyushu in Japan. It grows at an altitude of 500 to 1900 m and forms a grassland zone. The rod has a diameter of 2 to 5 mm and a height of 40 to 100 cm. It branches well at the top of the rod, and one branch comes out from the node. The knots hardly swell. The leaves are hairless on both sides. It is also known as "Yaku-zasa" in Japan.
