わが国の九州、屋久島の固有種です。近畿地方以西に分布する「においいばら（匂い茨）」の変種です。山地に生え、高さは２メートルほどになります。幹や枝には真っ直ぐな棘が生え、葉は奇数羽状複葉で卵状披針形から披針形の小葉が５〜７個つきます。頂小葉が最も大きいのが特徴です。５月から６月ごろ、直径１．５センチほどの白色の花を咲かせます。果実は球形の偽果で、秋に真っ赤に熟します。「においいばら」との形態的な相違は、必ずしも明確ではありません。

バラ科バラ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rosa yaku-alpina。英名はありません。

"Yakushima-ibara" (Rosa yaku-alpina) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Yaku Island, Kyushu of Japan. This is a variety of "Nioi-ibara" (Rosa onoei). This tree grows in mountains and can reach about 2 m in height. The stem and branches have straight prickles, and the leaves are odd-pinnate compound with 5-7 ovate-lanceolate to lanceolate leaflets. The terminal leaflet is considerable lager than the lateral leaflets. The white flowers around 1.5 cm across come in May to June. The fruits are round false fruits and ripen in bright red in fall. There is not morphologic disparity between this form and 'Nioi-ibara' (R. onoei).
