The Mulberry-leaf maple (Acer morifolium) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is endemic to Yakushima Island in Kyushu, Japan. It grows in forests from lowlands to mid-mountain elevations, reaching heights of about 15 m. The bark is green with black vertical stripes. The leaves are ovate or ovate-pentagonal, sometimes entire or shallowly lobed into 3 to 5 segments. It is dioecious, producing about 20 pale yellow flowers in drooping racemes from March to April. The fruit is a samara, with wings spreading nearly horizontally.
