わが国の屋久島の固有種で、「あかしょうま（赤升麻）」の変種です。標高４００メートル以上の沢沿いに生え、高さは５〜５０センチになります。茎や葉柄は赤紫色を帯びます。葉は３回３出複葉で、頂小葉は３裂します。７月から９月ごろ、花茎の上部の円錐花序に白色から淡紅色の花を咲かせます。葯は紅紫色です。

ユキノシタ科チダケサシ属の多年草で、学名は Astilbe thunbergii var. terrestris。英名はありません。

"Yakushima-shoma" (Astilbe thunbergii var. terrestris) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is an endemic species of Yakushima Island in Japan and is a variety of "Aka-shoma". It grows along a stream above 400 m above sea level and can reach 5 to 50 cm in height. The stems and petioles are purplish red. The leaves are triternate compound, and the apical leaflets are split into 3 lobes. From July to September, white to pink flowers bloom in the panicles at the top of the flower stalk. The anther is magenta.
