わが国の本州、中部地方の中部から関東地方の北部に分布しています。標高の高い山地に生え、高さは５〜１５センチほどになります。茎は分枝して匍匐し、根を下ろして広がります。葉は広卵形で、やや低い鋸歯があります。７月から８月ごろ、花茎を伸ばして淡紅紫色の花を咲かせます。

ゴマノハグサ科クワガタソウ属の多年草で、学名は Veronica japonensis。英名はありません。

"Yama-kuwagata" (Veronica japonensis) belongs to Scrophulariaceae (the Figwort family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from the central part of the Chubu region to the northern part of the Kanto region of Honshu in Japan. It grows in high altitude mountains and can reach 5 to 15 cm in height. The stems are branched, crawling, rooted and spread. The leaves are broad-ovate and have slightly lower serrations. From July to August, the flower stalks are stretched and the pink-purple flowers come in bloom.
