わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに朝鮮半島や中国に分布しています。林縁などに生え、蔓を伸ばして近くの樹木などに絡みつきます。雌雄異株です。７月から８月ごろ、穂状花序に白色の花を咲かせます。花弁はほとんど開きません。雌株には３枚の翼のある果実ができ、葉脇には珠芽（むかご）が形成されます。珠芽や根は食用にされます。栽培されている「ながいも」は、古くに中国から渡来したものですが、これと区別するために「じねんじょ（自然薯）」とも呼ばれます。

ヤマノイモ科ヤマノイモ属の多年草で、学名は Dioscorea japonica。英名は Glutinous yam、Yama-No-Imo。

The Glutinous yam (Dioscorea japonica) belongs to Dioscoreaceae (the Yam family). It is a peennial herb that is distributed westward from Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu of Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in forest edges and climbs up adjacent trees. It is dioecious. The spikes are borne and the white flowers bloom from July to August. The petals are open little or nothing. The female plants bear 3-winged fruits and bulbils on the axils. The roots and bulbils are used as food.
