ヨーロッパが原産です。標高５００〜２８００メートルの岩礫地に生え、高さは１５〜２５センチになります。あちこちに帰化していて、屋根の上や古い壁、煙突などにも見ることができます。多肉質の葉は長楕円形から披針形で、ロゼットを形成します。６月から７月ごろ、分枝した円錐花序に赤い花を咲かせます。古くから「アロエ」のような民間薬しとて、あるいは魔女の薬草としても知られています。屋根の上に植えると、雷から家を守ることができると信じる人もいます。

ベンケイソウ科センペルビブム属の常緑多年草で、学名は Sempervivum tectorum。英名は Houseleek、Common houseleek。

The Houseleek (Sempervivum tectorum) belongs to Crassulaceae (the Orpine family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is native to Europe. This herb grows in montane rocky areas 500-2800 m elevation and can reach 15-25 cm in height. It is naturalized in so many places and can be found on the roofs, old walls or chimneys. The leaves are succulent, oblong to lanceolate and form rosetts. The red flowers come on the ramose panicles from June to July. Houseleek is known as a very old medicine resembling to Aloe and a witch-plant. Some peoples believe that it is able to protect a house from lightning.
