The Resinous polypore (Ischnoderma resinosum) belongs to Polyporaceae (the Bracket fungi family). It is an annual fungus that is widely distributed throughout Japan, Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. It occurs from summer to fall, overlapping dead broadleaf trees such as "beech" and "oak". It has a semicircular pileus with radial wrinkles on the surface. The tender young shoots that emerge around summer are edible, and are boiled and pickled in miso. As it grows, it becomes hard and corky.
