"Yama-rakkyo" (Allium thunbergii) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Fukushima prefecture of Honshu south to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, Taiwan, the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, and China. It grows in mountain meadows and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are linear and have 3 ridges, with 3-5 at the base of the stem. From September to October, the flower stalks are stretched and umbels are borne, and many magenta flowers bloom. The name is because the bulbs resemble "Chinese onion" (Allium chinense). But it's not edible. In Taiwanese Chinese, "野蒜頭".
