バラ科ヤマブキショウマ属の多年草で、学名は Aruncus dioicus var. tenuifolius (syn. Aruncus sylvester)。英名はありません。
The "Yamabuki-shoma" (Aruncus dioicus var. tenuifolius) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a perennial herb that native all over Japan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in semi-shade places of mountains and can reach 30-90 cm in height. It is dioecious. The leaves are 2 times triternate compound, and the leaflets are ovate with sharply pointed biserrations on the margins. From June to August, small white flowers bloom in conical panicles. Male plants have showy flowers, while female plants have subdued flowers. Young shoots are edible. The Japanese name is derived from the numerous parallel veins on the leaves, which resemble "yamabuki" (Bachelor's button). In Chinese, it is called "假升麻" (jia sheng ma).
