The "Yama-sotetsu" (Plagiogyria matsumureana) belongs to the family Plagiogyriaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is native from Hokkaido to Honshu, Shikoku and Yaku Island in Japan. This fern grows in deep mountains and cool temperature areas. It is summer-green in the cold climates. The leaves are soft, unipennate and deep pinnately. The pinnae are not independent and the terminal pinna is not visible. The edible new shoots are borne in May and June and also called "Kogomi".
