わが国の各地をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。水辺の湿地などに生え、高さは３０〜８０センチになります。葉は披針形から長卵形で互生します。７月から１０月ごろ、茎頂や葉腋から花序をだし、淡紅色を帯びた白色の花を咲かせます。「ぼんとくたで」に似ていますが、葉の表面に黒斑がありません。葉には辛味があり、若芽は刺身のつまやタデ酢などに利用されます。

タデ科イヌタデ属の一年草で、学名は Persicaria hydropiper（syn. Polygonum hydropiper）。英名は Smartweed。

The Smartweed (Persicaria hydropiper) belongs to Polygonaceae (the Knotweed family). It is an annual herb that is distributed all over Japan and widely in the Northern Hemisphere. This herb grows in water's edges and can reach 30-80 cm in height. The leaves are lanceolate to long-ovate and alternate. The leaves have not black mottles on the surfaces. The clusters are borne on the stem apices or axils and bloom pale rose-pink to white flowers from July to October. The leaves are pungency and the young shoots are used for garnishes of sashimi.
