わが国の本州、愛知県以北から北海道、それに千島列島やサハリン、朝鮮半島北部、東シベリアに分布しています。高地の湿原や湿地に生え、高さは３０〜８０センチになります。よく分枝し、樹皮は明るい茶褐色で、白い皮目があります。葉は倒卵形から楕円形で、上半部に低い鋸歯があります。５月から６月ごろ、葉の展葉前に、花披のないマツカサ状の雄花序と雌花序をつけます。果実は、小さな堅果です。別名で「えぞやままもも（蝦夷山桃）」とも呼ばれます。

ヤマモモ科ヤチヤナギ属の落葉小低木で、学名は Gale belgica var. tomentosa。英名は Japanese sweet gale。

The Japanese sweet gale (Gale belgica var. tomentosa) belongs to Myricaceae (the Bayberry family). It is a deciduous shrub that is distributed northward from Aichi prefecture of Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, the northen Korean Peninsula and East Siberia. This shrub grows in highland moors and marshes, and can reach 30-80 cm in height. It is much branched and the barks are bright brownish-red with white lenticles. The leaves are obovate to elliptic with low toothed edges at upper-half of leaf blades. The male and female inflorescence are borne before foliation from May to June. They are pineal and not having perianthes. The fruits are nutlets.
