ヤポンのき (ヤポンの木)

アメリカの東南部から南部、バージニア州南東部からテキサス州にかけて分布しています。海岸沿いや谷間など湿ったところに生え、高さは６メートルほどになります。よく分枝して潅木状になり、葉は楕円で縁には波状の細かい鋸歯があります。春に小さな白い花を咲かせ、秋には果実が真っ赤に熟します。葉にはカフェインが含まれ、アメリカインディアンの人たちは煎じて嘔吐剤や下剤に利用したそうです。 写真中５・中６、中９〜１１・下は、垂れ園芸品種の「ペンデュラ（cv. Pendula）」。 |

モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑低木で、学名は Ilex vomitoria。英名は Yaupon、Yaupon holly、Cassena。 |

The Yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed to the southeastern and southern United States; from southeastern Virginia west to Texas. This shrub grows in moist soils of coastal area and valleys, and can reach about 6 m in height. It is much-branched and forming shrub. Leaves are elliptic with finely wavy-toothed edges. Small white flowers boom in spring, followed by fruits ripen red in fall. The leaves contain caffeine, and American Indians used them to prepare a tea to induce vomiting and as a laxative. Photos 6th, 7th, 10th-13th are 'Pendula', a trailing garden variety. |
