わが国の本州から四国・九州に分布しています。山地の林内や林縁に生え、高さは５０～１００センチになります。葉は１回羽状複葉で、羽片はふつう５～１０対、ときに１５対ほどあります。葉の表面には光沢がなく、また「やぶそてつ」よりも薄くて幅広く、基部の耳垂が目立ちます。また羽片の先端にも、細かい鋸歯があります。ただし、変異は大きく、光沢のあるものや耳垂れのないものもあります。

オシダ科ヤブソテツ属の常緑シダ類で、学名は Cyrtomium fortunei var. clivicola。英名はありません。

"Yama-yabu-sotetsu" (Cyrtomium fortunei var. clivicola) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergrren fern that is native from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. This fern grows in montane forests and forest edges, and it can reach 50-100 cm in height. The leaves are once pinnatly compound with 5-10 ( rarely 15) pairs of pinnae. They are dull green, thinner and wider than "Yabu-sotetsu" (Cyrtomium foutunei var. foutunei), and having visible fern earlobes. And they have fine toothed edges at the top of pinnae. This spieces is highly variable in shape; such as glossy surface or without fern earlobes.
