わが国の本州、東北地方以西から近畿地方、それに韓国の済州島にも分布してます。深山や亜高山帯の林内に生え、高さは２０〜７０センチほどになります。茎の上部は斜上し、楕円形の葉が互生します。葉の両面と茎には毛が生えています。雌雄異株です。６月から７月ごろ、小さな白い花を咲かせます。花序の軸が赤みを帯びるのが特徴です。丸い液果は赤く熟します。別名で「おおばゆきざさ（大葉雪笹）」とも呼ばれます。

ユリ科ユキザサ属の多年草で、学名は Smilacina hondoensis。英名はありません。

"Yamato-yukizasa" (Smilacina hondoensis) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Tohoku district to Kinki district of Honshu, as well as Jeju-do (southern Korea). This herb grows in deep or sub-alpine forests, and it can reach 20-70 cm in height. The upper stems spread side-upward and bear elliptic leaves alternately. The both sides of leaves and stems are covered with hairs. It is dioecious. The small white flowers bloom in June through July. It is defined by the reddish tinged axis of inflorescence. The fruits are round berries and ripen in red.
