"Yama-zakura" (Prunus jamasakura) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed from southern Tohoku-district of Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as the southern Korean Peninsula. This tree grows in mountains and can reach 15-25 m in height. The barks are purplish-brown to dark brown and have horizontal long lenticels. The leaves are oblong to ovate, alternate with fine toothed edges. The young leaves are varied, pale magenta to green. The white, pale pink, pale magenta flowers come in March o April almost as soon as foliation. The fruits are drupes and ripen bluckish purple in May to June.
