わが国の各地と朝鮮半島に分布しています。山野や丘陵の草地に生え、高さは２０〜４０センチになります。茎には４稜があり、卵形の葉が４個輪生します。葉縁と裏面には毛が生えています。５月から６月ごろ、小さな淡黄緑色の花を咲かせます。

アカネ科ヤエムグラ属の多年草で、学名は Galium trachyspermum。英名はありません。

"Yotsuba-mugura" (Galium trachyspermum) belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in grasslands of mountains, fields and hillsides, and can reach 20-40 cm in height. The stems are quadrangular and bear four whorled ovate leaves. The leaves are hairy at edges and abaxial sides. The small pale yellowish green flowers bloom May to June.
