ヨーロッパの西部および中部が原産です。水分の多い、肥沃な草地に生え、高さは1メートルほどになります。茎や葉は無毛です。葉は円形で、掌状に5〜7深裂します。夏の盛りから終わりにかけて花を咲かせます。花は濃い紫色から青色がかった紫色で、狭い長楕円形のヘルメット形、高さ1〜2センチです。この植物は、摂取や接触ともに、非常に有毒です。 
キンポウゲ科トリカブト属の多年草で、学名は Aconitum napellus。英名は Monk's-hood、Aconite、Wolfsbane。 
The Monk's-hood (Aconitum napellus) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native to western and central Europe. This herb grows in moist fertile grasslands, and can reach about 1 m in height. The stems and leaves are hairless. The leaves are rounded, palmately divided into five to seven deeply lobed segments. It flowers from mid to late summer. The flowers are dark purple to bluish-purple, narrow oblong helmet-shaped, 1-2 cm tall. The plant is extremely poisonous in both ingestion and skin contact.
