The "Yukiwari-ichige" (Anemone keiskeana) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is found from the Kinki region and westward on Honshu, as well as in Shikoku and Kyushu. It grows along the edges and on the forest floor of mixed woodlands, reaching a height of 15 to 30 cm. The leaves are deep green with a slight brownish tint and have whitish spots. The leaves emerge in the fall and persist through the winter. The basal leaves are deeply three-lobed; the leaflets are sessile and serrated. Around March, it produces flower stalks and blooms with pale purple flowers. It has no petals; the parts that appear to be petals are actually sepals, of which there are 12 to 22. There are 10 to 14 stamens. It propagates via rhizomes, and since all plants within a single clump share the same genetic makeup, they do not produce fruit. However, if they cross-pollinate with flowers from other clumps, they will bear fruit, producing an ovate-shaped achene. In early summer, the aboveground parts wither and disappear; it is a spring ephemeral.
