わが国の本州、三重県から奈良県にかけてと四国に分布しています。山地や海岸に近い照葉樹林や竹林に生え、高さは２０〜６０センチになります。葉は２個で、鳥足状の複葉で３〜５個の小葉をつける。４月から５月ごろ、紫褐色の仏炎苞のある花を咲かせます。和名は、暗い紫褐色の花苞につつまれた真っ白な付属体に由来します。

The Japanese cobra lily (Arisaema sikokianum) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed from Mie prefecture to Nara prefecture of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan. It grows in evergreen forests and bamboo grove near mountains and coasts, and can reach 20 to 60 cm in height. It has two leaves and is a pedatifid compound with 3 to 5 leaflets. From April to May, the flowers with purple-brown spathe bloom. The Japanese name comes from a pure white appendage surrounded by dark purple-brown flower bracts.
