北アメリカの東部が原産です。わが国へは明治時代の中頃に渡来しました。今では北海道から四国に帰化しています。道ばたや荒れ地などに生え、高さは３０〜７０センチになります。葉は長卵形で互生し、ほとんど全縁です。葉の基部はなかば茎を抱きます。８月から１０月ごろ、枝先に散房花序をだし、淡青紫色の頭花を咲かせます。和名は、花色が友禅染のように鮮やかなことから。園芸品種も数多く作出されています。

キク科シオン属の多年草で、学名は Aster novi-belgii。英名は Michaelmas daisy。

The Michaelmas daisy (Aster novi-belgii) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the eastern part of North America. It came to Japan in the middle of the Meiji era (about 130 years ago). It is now naturalized from Hokkaido to Shikoku. It grows on roadsides and wastelands, and can reach a height of 30 to 70 cm. The leaves are long-ovate and alternate, almost entire. The base of the leaf embraces the stem. From August to October, the corymbs are borne on the tips of the branches and bloom pale bluish-purple flower heads. The Japanese name is because the flower color is as vivid as Yuzen dyeing. Many horticultural varieties have also been produced.
